Low vs. High Porosity Hair: How to Tell and How to Build a Routine


Porosity is the one hair care idea that gets people to buy an entire second shelf of products, based on a test that does not work. The short answer: porosity describes how easily water moves in and out of the hair fiber. You cannot measure it in a glass of water. You can read it from how your hair behaves wet and while it dries, then adjust the weight and frequency of what you apply.

What hair porosity actually is
Your hair shaft is wrapped in cuticle cells, flat and overlapping like roof shingles. On top of them sits the part porosity content never mentions. According to a 2025 study in Dermatology Research and Practice, the outermost cuticle layer carries a hydrophobic lipid monolayer of 18-methyleicosanoic acid, or 18-MEA, attached to the surface proteins underneath by thioester bonds. That lipid layer is why healthy hair beads water instead of drinking it.
Porous, physically, means that layer is degraded and the cuticle scales are lifted, chipped, or missing in patches. Water and dissolved ingredients get in faster and leave faster. The same study notes that bleaching strips the top layer of 18-MEA and free lipids, leaving a hydrophilic, higher-friction surface, and cites work finding more than 80% of it is removed in a single bleaching treatment.
That number is the whole story. Damage drives high porosity: bleach, permanent color, relaxers, heat, UV, and the daily friction of brushing and towel-drying. Genetics contributes something. The New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists defines porosity by the integrity of the cuticle, and notes that the twists in curls and coils lift the cuticle along the fiber, more so in the more elliptical fibers of tightly textured hair. But the internet talks about porosity as if you were born with a number. Mostly, you earned it.
Worth saying plainly: porosity is not a dermatological diagnosis. It is a cosmetic science concept, useful for deciding how heavy a product should be and how often you need it.
The float test does not work
You know the one. Pull a clean strand, drop it in a glass of room-temperature water, and wait. Floats means low porosity, sinks means high, hovering means normal.
Cosmetic chemist Michelle Wong, a chemistry PhD who writes at Lab Muffin Beauty Science, has taken this apart. In her piece on porosity tests she writes that they "actually check for damage to the surface of hair," so more surface damage gets diagnosed as high porosity and less gets diagnosed as low. The mechanism is surface tension, not absorption. Intact hair keeps its oily surface layer, which repels water and lets the strand rest on the water's skin. Damaged hair has a hydrophilic surface that, as Wong puts it, "holds hands with surface of the water through hydrogen bonds," breaking that skin so the strand drops.
Surface damage and internal porosity are related, but they are not the same measurement. Wong points out the failure case: hair with a lot of surface damage gets labeled high porosity even when chemical treatments still take a long time to soak in. Add the noise of a bathroom-sink experiment, residual conditioner on the strand, how you collected it, water temperature, and the result stops meaning much.
Real porosity measurement is laboratory work. The NYSCC overview lists dynamic vapor sorption, which weighs hair as humidity changes, nitrogen gas adsorption to estimate pore size, and fiber swelling under water.
None of which makes porosity fake. It makes the free test a rough damage detector with a high error rate. Wong's alternative beats it: put the real product on a real strand of your hair and watch what happens.
How to read your hair without a test
Five observations, all free, all from a normal wash day. Do them across two or three washes, not one.
- Time to full saturation. Does your hair soak through in seconds, or does water bead and run off for a while first?
- Air-dry time. Soaking wet to fully dry, no heat. Under an hour, or most of the afternoon?
- How a leave-in behaves. Does a light water-based leave-in vanish into damp hair, or sit on top as a slick film?
- How fast a mask runs out. Does deep conditioning carry you a week, or feel gone by the next wash?
- Humidity. Does frizz appear the moment it gets muggy, or does your hair mostly ignore the weather?
The tighter-cuticle reading: water resists at first, drying takes forever, products sit on top, humidity is survivable. The more open-cuticle reading: instant saturation, fast drying, products disappear, frizz arrives with the forecast.
Two caveats. Most people land in the middle on most of these. And porosity is not one number for your whole head: the NYSCC notes it can vary along the length of the fiber. Your roots are newer and usually less porous than your ends, which have been through years of sun, heat, and combs.
A low porosity hair routine
A low porosity hair routine is not about forcing anything in. It is about lowering resistance, then not overloading whatever got through.
- Use warmth. Warmth thins thick product so it spreads, and speeds how fast water and ingredients diffuse into the fiber. Apply masks in a warm shower, or cap your hair for the last few minutes of the rinse. A heated cap does the same job.
- Dilute and emulsify. Warm conditioner or leave-in in wet palms first. Thick product applied cold mostly stays where you put it.
- Go light, go water-first. Thin, water-based textures spread and absorb. Heavy butters and oils stacked on a flat cuticle sit on top, weigh hair down, and block whatever comes next.
- Apply to damp, not dripping. The American Academy of Dermatology advises towel-drying until hair is damp before a leave-in so the product does not concentrate in one spot, and applying it to hair rather than scalp, where it can cause buildup and irritation.
- Clarify on a schedule. Buildup is the characteristic failure mode here, not dryness. A clarifying shampoo every two to four weeks resets the baseline. If your roots also go greasy or itchy between washes, a scalp care routine covers the skin side of the same problem.
Fine, low-porosity hair is the classic buildup case, where two extra products turn a good hair day into a limp one, and a hair care routine for fine hair goes deeper on managing weight. If a product seems to do nothing, the fix is usually a lighter one on damper hair, not a richer one.
A high porosity hair routine
Here the fiber takes everything in and lets it straight back out, so the job is moisture in, then moisture held.
- Layer in order of weight. Water-based leave-in first, while hair is soaking. Then a cream. Then a light oil or film-forming gel last, to slow evaporation. The order matters more than the products do.
- Protein has a real role here. Porous hair is missing structure, and deposited protein fills part of that gap. More on its limits below.
- Detangle gently, with the right tool. The AAD advises combing textured hair while it is damp with a wide-tooth comb, and letting straight hair dry a bit first. Wet hair is fragile, and porous wet hair more so.
- Turn the temperature down. A cooler final rinse is harmless, but there is little evidence it seals the cuticle. On tools, the AAD recommends the lowest heat setting, limiting contact time, and using hot tools less often, aiming for once a week or less.
- Fix the source before the symptom. If bleach or color is producing the porosity, no leave-in outruns it. The AAD suggests stretching touch-ups to every eight to ten weeks or longer, and doing only one chemical service at a time.
Curly and coily hair skews porous, partly by shape and partly because styling it takes more manipulation. If that is you, a curly hair care routine is the better starting point.
Protein, moisture, and the balance people get wrong
Protein treatments deposit and reinforce. They do not repair. Hair is not living tissue, and nothing you buy rebuilds a cuticle biologically. The effect is still measurable: a 2021 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that low and mid molecular weight hydrolysed keratins penetrated deep into the hair cortex while high molecular weight peptides adsorbed onto the surface, and that mid and high molecular weight peptides raised the fiber's stiffness and reduced breakage at both 20% and 80% relative humidity. Real, useful, and temporary. It washes out.
Protein overload deserves more honesty than it gets. It is a widely reported user experience with a thin formal evidence base. On The Beauty Brains podcast, cosmetic chemist Valerie George has cautioned that wheat protein can form stiff, brittle films, while Perry Romanowski has argued protein is rarely a problem at the concentrations used in most products. The stiffness blamed on protein may also be hard water minerals or film-forming polymers. What is not in dispute is the feel: rough, straw-like hair that snaps rather than stretches.
Over-moisturized hair is the opposite failure. Limp, mushy, overly stretchy when wet, curls that will not hold. The curl community calls the chronic version hygral fatigue, which I would treat as a plausible model rather than settled science.
The reset for either starts the same way. Clarify, then reintroduce the opposite thing. Straw-like means backing off protein and leaning on conditioners and emollients. Porosity is a dial, not a diagnosis
Porosity earns its keep as a heuristic for two decisions: how heavy your products should be, and how often you need them. It is not a hair type, it does not deserve its own shelf, and it does not require a matched five-step system in coordinated packaging.
Be skeptical of any brand that sorts you into a category and then sells you the products for it. The sorting is done with a test that reads surface damage, on a trait that varies from your roots to your ends and shifts every time you color your hair. That is certainty the science cannot deliver. The same goes for wash frequency, which people love to derive from porosity and which is really driven by scalp oil, styling product, and lifestyle. Two-week reset if you have no idea where you are
If you have been buying by category and nothing works, strip it back.
- Day 1: clarify once. One wash with a clarifying shampoo, then a plain rinse-out conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. Nothing else.
- Days 1 to 7: basic only. Your regular shampoo and conditioner. No masks, oils, leave-ins, or stylers you can avoid. Note air-dry time and how your hair feels on day one and day three.
- Days 8 to 14: add one variable. One product, for at least three washes, before you judge it. A leave-in first if your hair feels dry, a protein treatment if it feels weak and limp.
- Write it down. Two lines per wash: what you used, how long it took to dry, how it felt. Memory is a terrible instrument, and drying time is the most informative number you have.
By the end you will know more about your own hair than any test could tell you.
When it is damage, not porosity
Some things are not a product problem, and no routine change fixes them.
- A sudden change in texture over weeks rather than years.
- Breakage at a consistent length all around your head, which points to a mechanical or chemical cause.
- Hair that snaps while wet with almost no stretch.
- Scalp symptoms: persistent itch, pain, burning, scaling, sores, or redness that does not settle.
- Patchy or rapidly increasing loss, or bald patches with a defined edge.
- No improvement after eight weeks of consistent, gentle care.
Any of that belongs with a board-certified dermatologist or a qualified trichologist, not with a new leave-in. It does not mean something is seriously wrong, only that the question has moved past what a conditioner can answer.
Frequently asked questions
Can hair porosity change? Yes, and on hair you already have it moves in one direction. Bleach, color, heat, and sun all increase it, and the fiber is dead, so it does not recover. What changes is the hair growing in, which is why roots and ends often read differently.
Is low porosity the same as coarse hair? No. Porosity is how the cuticle handles water, coarse is the diameter of one strand, and density is how many strands you have. Any combination is possible.
Does the glass-of-water test ever tell you anything? It says something about surface damage, which is loosely related to porosity, with enough noise from residue, collection method, and water temperature that I would not build a routine on it.
Should low porosity hair avoid oils entirely? No, but use less and use them last. A few drops of light oil sealing a water-based layer is nothing like a heavy butter on dry hair, which sits on a flat cuticle and blocks whatever comes next.
How do I know if I need protein? The usual sign is hair that feels mushy wet, stretches a long way before snapping, and will not hold a shape. Try one protein-containing treatment for three washes. If it goes rough and brittle, you have your answer and can clarify it back out.
Porosity is a dial for weight and frequency, not an identity. Read your hair from how it saturates, how it dries, and how long a conditioner lasts.
